Muryo Koju-Do and
Wisteria Chapels
Los Angeles California

client:
Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple

Special Considerations:
Design a building addition to be harmonious with the existing structure. The new construction would meld old and new in the appearance of a singular structure.

Scope

LA Betsuin’s Ministers and members requested the design team create a building addition for ADA compliant restrooms and two chapels. Anne Garbarine worked with architects Robert Takei, Roy Takei and Iwao Yamaguchi to design the project. The chapels showcased shrines and murals commissioned and brought to LA from Japan. Traditional wood elements were carefully incorporated into the interiors to provide the appropriate setting for the shrines. Integration of a new paint scheme, design elements, and materials taken from the existing structure united the old and new buildings seemlessly.
